The problem wasn't the raised taxes. We want roads and bridges to be maintained and to remain standing (except perhaps the viaduct), and we want expanded transit. What we don't need and, I hope I'm right on this, what we don't want, is more roads. 'If you build it, they will drive.' On the other hand - that quote (taken out of context - I couldn't find the rest of speech) is a dangerous bromide that promotes low expectations and tolerates poor performance.
