Many cities were decaying by 1962, but Seattle was still in pretty good shape - yes, the viaduct was complete and the i-5 Freeway under construction with Paul Thiry and others warning of its dangers. However, we had just hosted the Century 21 Worlds Fair, there were still 5 department stores plus dozens of specialty stores in the CBD, we still relied primarily on electrically powered transit isiden the city, the schools were well funded and in good shape. Then the shortsighted "leadership" of Gordon Clinton, Myrtle Edwards, Dorm Braman, Lloyd Graber and the rest of them that wanted Seattle to emulate Los Angeles pretty much changed the face of the city for a couple of decades. The no votes on transit at the end of the 1960s sealed the deal. It has taken a couple of generations to reclaim the city and we still have decades of work to do.

Remember that in 1962 we lived with decaying urban cores in most American cities. Believe it or not, we have come a long way on that front.
