The idea that an income tax will be implemented and the sales tax will be reduced commensurately (“revenue neutral”) is ludicrous. Once another tax avenue is made available, total taxes will rise.

What I think we do need is a constitutional change to allow for gas taxes to be used for transit on a local basis. Within the Sound Transit district, we could effectively shift some portion of ST and Metro’s sales tax funding to the gas tax. Easier said than done, I realize.

I try to be fair-minded to all comers–really what these protesters seemed to be against wasn’t taxes per se, it was large deficit spending. You know, like the kind wars create.

I used to be a barista in Seattle and if I had a nickel for every time an Oregon state resident would bitch about our sales tax I would be a rich man. Some would actually go through all the trouble of detaxing – paperwork and all – for what added up to about 10 cents. I support a state income tax even if only for that reason, if we can lower our sales tax and shut up the visitors from Oregon state.

There was some big money behind the teabaggers. The very folks who naturally don’t want to pay taxes.

Seems like sensible people are getting no voice.

I’ve told all the advocacy groups asking me to email my legislator and oppose cuts in spending on their particular good thing to get together with the rest and push for a fair and decent taxation source.

State income taxes are not socialist as long as rights and responsibilities devolve to the states. Given that almost all the other states have them, I’d say it’s more like we are troglodytes.
