Cheap SLUT

 The New Seattle Streetcar!!!

Just took a ride on the Seattle Streetcar!, and as we started at Westlake and Stewart, and immediately stopped at Westlake and Stewart, then started, and immediately stopped at Westlake and 6th, then started, and immediately stopped at Westlake and Virginia St, then started, and immediately stopped at Westlake and 7th,… you get the picture…I started thinking WTF! I can walk faster than this! Then, as we puttered along in the shiney new streetcar and slowly passed numerous Paul Allen developments I got it. Welcome to Allentown where a streetcar is nothing more than another way to sell condos! It certainly isn’t a very effective way to get from point A to point B.

    Agreed…
Fuck the SLUT build more bike lanes.

I’m pretty sure I read in the times or the PI that cycling is actually faster than riding the slut anyway. So yeah what he said…

The saving grace for the SLUT is that people are irrational: they love choo-choo trains but dispise yucky buses.

pooh pooh on all of you.
Me and the lady happened to be dropping off the car at Firestone. It was raining. We jumped on a very clean (and packed!) SLUT to get to Westlake Ctr. It was faster than walking. And drier. We shopped and then SLUT’ed it back. Marvelous.
    So pooh on you’all.

Is it not possible that a hilly, balkanized inner city (like Seattle) might benefit from “local” transportation solutions?

Yes, I think it is possible, and perhaps even beneficial, to have “local” transportation solutions, but they have to be compatible with other modes. I would say that the SLUT is incompatible with bicycles (stupid alignment of tracks) and cars, but I could care less for the latter…only the cars and all the stop lights tend to slow the trolley to such a degree that I have concluded walking is faster (if also wetter-oh well).

Why is it irrational for people to prefer choo-choo trains to buses? Seems rational to me that people place value on the quality of their transportation experience, and rational that a spacious trolley could be better a better experience than a narrow bus.

If you are only going to 2200 Westlake from downtown, then yes, it might be faster to walk. I ride the slut regularly from Hutch to downtown and back. It’s a quick ride (10 minutes each way), and 1,000,000 times more pleasant than the #70 bus, which is sometimes a 20 minute ride or more to go the same distance. Multiple doors and wide aisle make getting on and off much quicker than a bus, where everyone has to line up single file to get in or out. The 70 is often at capacity during peak hour, so even trying to find a place to stand is a challenge. I have found the slut a very, very welcome addition to transit in this city.
